Wood burner replacement funding

Has your wood burner expired? You may be eligible for funding to have it replaced.

If your wood burner has expired or is close to expiring, you may be eligible for funding for replacement heating. You can check the expiry date of your wood burner at Environment Canterbury’s website here. Please be aware that this wood burner register is based on information supplied to Environment Canterbury by local councils and may not be up to date or complete.

CEA has funding available for replacement heating through the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme and Environment Canterbury. This funding is available for low income homeowners or homeowners living in low income areas. Contact us to check your eligibility and book an assessment.

How does it work?

If you are eligible (see criteria below), one of our qualified energy advisors will visit you for a Home Performance Assessment (HPA). This is a comprehensive, no-obligation assessment of the energy efficiency of your home which offers impartial advice on improvements. Our assessor will discuss your heating preferences with you and advise what subsidies are available. Replacement heating options that may be eligible for subsidies, include Ultra Low Emissions Burners (ULEBs), pellet fires or heat pumps. Any funding will also include the removal or permanent disabling of your old burner.

What are the criteria?

This programme is for homeowners within the Christchurch, Rangiora, Kaiapoi or Ashburton Clean Air Zones as defined in the Canterbury Air Regional Plan.

To be eligible for funding, you need to have a valid Community Services Card or live in an eligible Social Deprivation Index area.

Why do you need to have your wood burner replaced?

Your wood burner is authorised for use for twenty years.  After twenty years the authorisation expires and it becomes non-compliant. As burners get older, they produce more pollution which may or may not be visible. This pollution impacts our health, which is why they need to be replaced.
