Having an efficient source of home heating, and using it correctly, is essential to keeping you and your family warm during the cold South Island winters. Types of heating:

Heat pump

A heat pump works by extracting heat from in the air and bringing it indoors. Heat pumps create more heat than the electrical energy consumed to run the system. When used efficiently they can be 3 to 4 times as efficient as a conventional heater; e.g. for every $1.00 you spend, you get up to $4.00 worth of heat. 

Make sure you are using your heat pump on the correct settings:

  • Don’t use the “Auto” mode, set heat (sunshine) or cool (snowflake).
  • Fan speed, we recommend that it be kept in the “Auto” position.


Wood burner

Modern log burners are a great source of heat on a cold winter’s night – particularly if your house is poorly insulated, or you have large rooms/high ceilings. They are relatively cheap to run, if used correctly. Make sure you buy or cut your wood in the summer so you have a good supply of dry wood in the winter time. Heat transfer systems

Heat Transfer Systems use excess heat to warm other areas of the home by transferring it from one room to another room or multiple rooms. Typical home heating concentrates on warming the lounge, which means you are often hot in one room while the rest of the house is unbearably cold. This is typical when using a wood burner with some models having outputs over 20kW.

How does this system work?

  1. Excess heat from your wood burner will rise to ceiling level, where with an insulated ceiling warm air with temperatures of up to 35°c is trapped.
  2. This excess heat can be effectively transferred to other rooms using a high quality fan and acoustic insulated ducting.
  3. Air moves from the bedrooms back to the lounge creating a natural re-circulation of warm, dry air throughout the home.
