An often overlooked aspect of any property, lighting can have a significant effect on the energy efficiency and comfort of a home.
Older style downlights, lights that are recessed into the ceiling, are common in many homes built in the 1980’s and 90's. The problem is that 95% of the power they use is converted to heat, not light. This style of light requires 100mm of clearance between the light fitting and any insulation, which leaves large gaps in the ceiling insulation.
In addition to this, many of these lights have a gap between the bulb and the roof, meaning that hot air flows freely through to the ceiling, reducing the efficiency of your home.
I-C rated LED downlights
The recommended solution for this problem is to install I-C rated LED downlights in your property. They are 90% more efficient than traditional downlights, and insulation can be placed directly on top of them. They are highly efficient and have a much longer life span, up to 50,000 hours.
CEA can perform an assessment of your property’s lighting, and provide a quote to have any downlights replaced by a registered electrician that we work with. We will also fill any insulation gaps left by the old lights. The cost of this is between $50-100 – but your tenants will benefit from increased power savings, and a warmer home.
